The Meg (2018, USA / China) Review

The Meg (2018)

Sometimes you go to the cinema with a certain expectation. After seeing trailers for a film promising non-stop excitement or tear-jerking performances, you buy your ticket and prepare to either be blown away or disappointed. After watching trailers for The Meg I can assure you, that you will get exactly what you expect from this movie featuring Jason Statham and a 75-foot prehistoric shark.

If you want a tense thriller like The Shallows or a hydrophobia-inducing classic like Jaws, then you might want to skip this one.

“Pleased to eat you.”

Super Dark Times (2017, USA)

Super Dark Times (2017)

Sometimes in film, a mood or feeling transcends the writing, itself. Kevin Philips’ debut feature, Super Dark Times is one of those films. The overall moodiness and aura of this teenage drama/horror film creates a skin-crawling dread that stuck with me long after viewing it. Super Dark Times is a teenage drama film that feels closer to horror at many points, and because of this, may scare off some fans of either genre. It is also extremely well-crafted and wonderfully moody, which is why it is a film that should definitely not be overlooked.

“If anybody asks, we’re already fucked.”

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010, Finland / Norway / France / Sweden)

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

Sometimes during the holiday season, the same nine or ten Christmas movies that appear on television can get quite stale. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale has a very different take on a Santa Claus than your typical holiday film, VERY different. As the film’s young protagonist Pietari says, “The Coca-Cola Santa is just a hoax.” In this movie, being on Santa’s naughty list gets you a far more severe punishment than just a lump of coal in your stocking.

I watched this film on a whim and was pleasantly surprised.

“This Christmas everyone will believe in Santa Claus.”

Eraserhead (1977, USA)

Eraserhead (1977)

This [month] marks the 40th anniversary of David Lynch’s enigmatic cult film “Eraserhead”; a bizarrely strange and surreal body-horror film that is sure to get under your skin. In 1977, the film became a popular ‘Midnight Movie’ and has continued to bother viewers’ minds since then.

Every single scene is shot in stark black-and-white with constant industrial background ambience, which is sure to make the viewer feel on edge. Love it, or hate it, this movie will for sure leave an impression on you.

The Neon Demon (2016, USA / Denmark / France)

The Neon Demon (2016)

Of all of the films released in 2016, Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon is one that I have thought about most. The reviews of the film are polarizing. Some people loved it, others hated it. Films like this are exactly the kind that I love to watch, films that really bore into your brain; films that you can’t quite pin down into a genre or a simple one dimensional theme. I could feel the director’s narcissism through the screen… I am still not sure how to feel about The Neon Demon, but since viewing it some time ago, I still can’t seem to get it out of my head.

Shin Godzilla (2016, Japan)

Shin Godzilla (2016) Theatrical Poster

Once I heard the news that the new Japanese Godzilla film was going to be playing in my city, I was overjoyed. Ever since I was a child, I have always loved Godzilla. I went into Shin Godzilla very excited to see how my favorite giant monster was going to be reimagined.

Shin Godzilla (also Godzilla Resurgence) is the latest installment and 31st film in the Godzilla franchise. Produced by Toho, this film is a reboot in which Godzilla’s origin story is retold in modern Japan. The film was written and directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi.

“A god incarnate. A city doomed.”
