In 1988, Dick Maas, a Dutch film director who has gain success within his native country with films such as De Lift and Flodder, brought to the screen one of his biggest pictures, the horror action thriller, Amsterdamned. Which at the American Film Market of 1988, would go on to become the third highest selling motion picture that year.
But what is Amsterdamned and should we thank Shameless for bringing it to us in their latest release?
Call it a sequel, call it a re-make, call it a stand-alone film, call it whatever you like but Evil Dead II is still one of the daddies of the horror genre. A culmination of raw talent, smart ideas, excellent execution and Ash, Evil Dead II is the business.
Our hero Ash returns, or continues (or whatever) his duel with the Candarian demons or deadites, in the follow-up to Sam Raimi’s classic The Evil Dead. Surviving the first night against the forces of evil, can Ash survive again and stop these horrors from hell?
It’s the 80’s, it has teenagers and it’s set in a high school, all the ingredients you need for a traditional 80’s teen high school movie. But this is a Troma production, so don’t expect your normal run-of-the-mill fayre here, oh no. Add in some gore, gorse-out moments, sex, drugs, biker gangs and basement dwelling radioactive monsters and you’ll be on the right track.

Ash is back and is ready to hand out some boomstick punishment in the third of the Evil Dead trilogy.
Following a harrowing night of demonic possession in Evil Dead II, unassuming store clerk Ash is time-warped into England’s Dark Ages, where he must find the Necronomicon, a compendium of the black arts, before he can return home. Fortunately, he has time to romance a beautiful princess, tune up his chainsaw hand, and battle an army of skeletons led by himself.
In a picturesque Sicilian fishing village all is peaceful and serene. Fishermen are out on the boats bringing in the catch of the day. However, they catch more than they bargain for when a secret US spaceship crash-lands just off shore after meteorite struck. Did anybody or anything survive the crash if so what havoc would be unleashed on humanity?
In this ground-breaking film with special-effects by the great Ray Harryhausen, we see inept scientist and military officials run around Italy after something that is perfectly harmless unless provoked.
In the isolated town of Perfection, not all is perfect. As strange occurrences and corpses mount up, the inhabitants led by Val & Earl, two hapless handy-men, doing what they can to fund their next beer, find themselves at the mercy of marauding underground giant worms.
This great film, which can be found somewhere within the television schedules nearly ever week, is an excellent example of a modern day ‘creature feature’, though now 20 years old, has not lost any of its charms, with a good selection of colourful characters and well paced storytelling.
