Space: An Ever Popular Frontier

EVE Online (2003)

It is undeniable that media set in space is incredibly popular. Whether it is the latest Star Wars movie or the newest Call of Duty video game, space is in the forefront and in high demand. Sci-fi and space in general have a long history of TV shows, films and video games and while they have some similarities they are many radically different takes on the dark emptiness.

Space Invaders (1978)

EVE Online remains one of the most popular MMOs in the world and sees an entire simulated galaxy with its own commerce, feuds and wars. Players take their EVE Online world very seriously, but it isn’t the first video game to explore space. One of the first video games was Space Invaders.

Space Invaders was a simple game all about shooting down aliens as they slowly descend towards the play. It’s a classic that most people will have heard of. And now there is an online slot machine themed around this vintage video game. It’s available to play at Coral and is considered the best new slot of 2016.

Space sees a lot of attention outside of video games well though. Star Wars saw a grand return in 2015 with the start of a new trilogy and plenty of spin-off movies to boot. Star Wars is so popular that it has conventions held each year for fans and the recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens was one of the most successful films of all time. With new ranges of Star Wars toys and games being released to tie into the hugely popular sci-fi franchise it is clear that people love space.

No Man's Sky (2016)

Many people were hugely disappointed though, in the No Man’s Sky video game. This space exploration game lacked many of the high thrills expected and was instead a more steady and quiet discovery of space. Players were analysing wildlife and collecting minerals rather than exploding aliens and saving the galaxy. For others though this was exactly the game they wanted. It took a different path to a regular sci-fi game and was a welcomed breath of fresh air. It is unlikely we’ll see another game like No Man’s Sky due to the divide it created in its audience, but it is definitely one people will remember.

Whether you’re a fan of classic Star Trek, alien shooter games or anything else space related, we have all be exposed to the mystery and wonder of things beyond our world. With no clear answers as to what exactly is out there and whether other life truly exists, there are plenty of stories to be made guessing and exploring the wonders of space.
